May is maternal mental health month. A time when we recognize the profound impact having a child has on our mental health. When women become pregnant for the first time or postpartum which follows having a child, they often experience their first full-blown episode of anxiety, depression or other mental health conditions. Moms who miscarry, have stillbirths, lose a child in the first year after childbirth, have trouble conceiving and adopt, develop mental health concerns and problems too.
While hormones have a role in maternal mental health conditions so does the constant guilt they put on themselves for doing everything right and never making a mistake. However, I can tell you after 30+ years of being a psychologist specializing in maternal mental health, perfection doesn’t exist and moms make themselves miserable trying to attain it. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re being pressured to use this time productively. What’s a mom to do???
Here’s what I suggest:
First, watch this video from Juggling the Jenkins where Tiffany talks about her “Quarantine Mood Swings.” I’m sure she was PMS’ing that day.
Next, check out my webinar, where I teach you coping skills that are good for pregnancy, postpartum and other major life changes including the COVID pandemic.
Then, Save the Date for my upcoming zoom webinar on Tuesday, May 12th at 10am about pregnancy, postpartum and early motherhood. We’d love to see you there!
