mbhccombinedAt the Midwest Mind Body Health Center, my mission is to help you improve your health and well-being, mind, body and spirit. Founded by me, Dr. Diane Sanford, internationally recognized for my work in pregnancy and postpartum emotional health, I provide counseling and mindfulness classes based on my Stress Less Live Better program to reduce anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, and problems and medical conditions that are triggered or intensified by stress..

Since seeing my first postpartum mom 30 years ago, I have been struck by how women are often affected by significant hormonal and life changes at the same time. For example with pregnancy and postpartum, the effects are so strong that we have a 15% greater likelihood of an episode of anxiety, depression or other emotional health issues occurring then. This is also true when our hormones are stirred up during peri-menopause, menopause and adolescence. That’s why my approach to therapy looks at your mind-body health including your hormones and lifecycle factors such as pregnancy or postpartum in addition to self-esteem, role changes like when children leave home to become adults, work-life balance, relationship support,  situational stressors, prior traumatic experiences and how you’ve been able to cope with life changes over time.

I have specialized experience in women’s health conditions including: pregnancy, postpartum, pregnancy loss, fertility, moms with multiples, midlife, peri-menopause, menopause and adolescence. Many of the clients I see have anxiety conditions with depression or other symptoms and my Stress Less Live Better mindfulness program offers an effective solution in reducing emotional distress and other problems related to your emotional health. With a background in marital and family therapy, I provide psychological care to many couples, families with teens, adult children dealing with aging parents and other lifecycle changes that families and couples go through.

My treatment combines counseling with mindfulness classes because I want you to have a toolkit for coping with stress that you can use that are practical and simplified to fit into your life without adding time stress. Studies have shown that mindfulness skills decrease anxiety, depression, OCD and PTSD symptoms as well as the stress associated with fertility issues, postpartum depression, midlife changes, menopausal symptoms, and sexual dysfunction. Mindfulness skills may also reduce the need for medication by increasing a person’s ability to cope with life stressors by calming their mind and body.
